This Brown Ale is lovingly brewed by the fantastic Wylam.
This tasty brew comes in a 440ml can and is 11.3% ABV.
How do we forecast the future of beer?
A tough question in an even tougher climate…
Being purveyors of the old and new world style here at Wylam HQ we feel a hark back to malt forward beer production would be a future path for the professional brewer.
Lost and unpopular styles are a critical part of ongoing beer production so we’ve gone for the doomed Brown Ale…
A wide variety of English heritage malts and cereals have been utilised to produce this megalith imperial brown. Pumped up to a comforting winter season ABV with a plush addition of Canadian maple syrup producing a sweet hickory nut finish complemented perfectly with an all English whole cone kettle hop bitterness.’

This is unbelievable. Treacle, molasses and a big smack in the face. Rich and joyous without being oversweet. All but perfect bar the enormous abv with the tallboy can – it’s very drinkable!

rather sweet, pretty smooth would drink again

This was awesome. A great brown ale with the sweetness disguising the strength without overpowering the beer.

If you like very dark very strong beer with a sweet maple flavour then you’ll love this. Tasted a bit like port to me, only 4 stars cos it’s not really my cup of tea.
Alan –
Surprised how much I enjoyed it, like a warm maple sherry. Was a perfect Christmas drink.

Poured clear dark brown with a quick-dissipating head. Sweet and alcoholic aroma. Stewed apples and fruit from the malt come through first. The sweetness is there and tasty, definite maple on the finish with nuttiness. Warming alcohol throughout, a real cold night sipper! Distinctly different from an imperial stout which pleases me! Just something altogether different and I really like the innovation. Can’t get over the initial fruity blast and can’t quite pintpoint what fruit it is so I’m settling on baked orchard fruits! Impressive but could only have 1!

Loves me a brown and this is a good one. Quite malty and sweet but good with, say…fruit cake.
Stuart –
Absolutely amazing, tastes like a stout.

If you don’t have a sweet tooth , avoid this, but that classic brown ale flavour with maple sweetness is heaven for me

Do not be fooled by the name – Wylam have only really ever been brewers of relatively strong and hoppy pale ales with fruity flavours, and this is little different. If anything the addition of the overly sweet maple tips this over into tasting more like a barley wine than a brown ale, and not a particularly good one at that.
