This Barley Wine is lovingly brewed by the fantastic Northern Monk.
This tasty brew comes in a 440ml can and is 13% ABV.
Our third collaboration with Lord Whitney is inspired by the flavours and traditions of merriment and mischief associated with the winter season. Taking influence from drinks such as wassail and mulled wine amongst other things, we put together this rich, warming oat wine. With the goal to brew something strong, sweet and malt-forward, we decided to move past the more traditional barley wine, and instead base our recipe around oats, which as well as being good for improving mouthfeel in NEIPAs, bring a nutty, honey-like flavour and an earthy, seasonal spice when used in high volumes. Using a mix of malted and naked oats, we backed up with some barley and maize to help boost extraction and add an extra element of complexity, bringing with it flavours of lightly toasted bread, corn, and a touch of caramel sweetness. Double-mashed, and with added sugars to boost the fermentables in the wort, at the end of the 10-day fermentation we transferred the beer to condition on 15g/l of orange zest and Sri Lankan cinnamon sticks for two weeks, until the flavours balanced with the spicy, silky base beer.

A lot going on here- very rich, without being heavy, though very slow drinking. Sweet though not cloying, with orange led Christmassy flavours prominent- think mulling spices. The fact this even drinkable is quite an achievement, let alone being as good as it is

Fantastic brew from the good people at Northern Monk

I thought this was fantastic, a fairly unique beer, very orangey, with a boozy kick that almost takes it into liqueur territory

Lovely smooth and zesty

Really enjoyed this, cinnamon candied orange flavours

A slightly bizarre flavour. Not unpleasant but more like an orange liqueur than a beer. Much prefer a Barleywine over an Oatwine based on this example.

A bit of misfire for me this one, it shows promise but it doesn't quite seem to manage the balance between the flavours of the oat wine and the orange.

A spicy aroma of cinnamon, as well as fruity orange and clementine. Pours a beautiful golden amber colour in the glass. Low carbonation with an ale like body, Lord Whitney starts on fruity, smooth, sweet orange and in the background there's powdery, fragrant and spicy cinnamon. Then you get a warming alchohol heat, but without any strong punch of alchohol. It ends on a gorgeous citrus and honey taste that leaves you with a smooth, sweet and thick honey mouthfeel, as well as a creamy and earthy oat texture. I don't rightly know what an oat wine is, but we need to be making more of them, this is unreal.
