Pouring near black and boasting a litany of dark chocolate and bitter coffee notes thanks to the roasted malt, this stout is perfectly sessionable beer that doesn’t skimp on flavour. Expect liquorice, dark berries and citrus fruits. Bittersweet and dry at the finish, one just won’t be enough.

Kernel beers are always great. Dry stouts are very interesting, have a good roasty malt base, odd shiny flavour and a nice amount of hops. Low ABV too

Surprisingly average for kernel, quite harsh
John –
Very enjoyable smooth stout with a good dry finish.
Adam –
Probably my new favourite brewery because of their darker stuff. This is a lovely stout: just the right side of booze without affecting flavour.
Emily –
Liam –
Sweet with a pleasant finish

David –
Dark roasted malty coffee but quite light for a stout making it easy drinking
Jans –
Enjoyable.
Nick –
Again another solid stout from Kernel – will order again.
Ian –
Quite charcoaly
David –
3.5/5 Deep, dark but not too heavy. Good stout.
Clive –
Every bit as good as I expected it to be ! At 4.5 % a very sessionable stout with bags of flavour.
Matt –
Not as complex as their other stouts of course, but still very nice!
Clément –
Really good stout. Very malty, I love that.

The Kernel beers never disappoint. This is a lovely, smooth stout which has a dry finish.
Robert –
Roasted cacao nibs and coffee. Smooth, dry and dark. A classy stout.
Steve –
First Kernel beer after reading quite a bit of hype. Not disappointed at all!
Ken –
not very good

Not that nice

Oh wow! Another delicious stout from The Kernel. This one was easier to drink than the others and one I’ll definitely buy again!
Caz –
lovely drink, not too strong 🙂

I think Kernel change the hops they use for each brew frequently: this bottle is “Taiheke Wakatu” presumably from NZ. Maybe next week’s brew will be different.
This is quite different from the Wiper & True “Milkshake” stout I reviewed last week. For one thing, it isn’t sticky or chewy. It looks and tastes and smells dark. There is a lot of dark flavour to it; I can taste the roasting, with hints of coffee and maybe black chocolate and quite a bit of liquorice.
Its roastiness and astringent bitterness persist into the after-taste. Maybe I have catholic tastes, but I liked this beer.

Really enjoyed this! Great to have a stout that finishes bitter, really exciting to drink.

Good stout

Really good hop notes and roastiness

One of the nicest stouts I’ve had, dry hopping doesnt overpower it lovely balance.

‘Tis the dark season 💪 Good body for the ABV. Smooth mouthfeel. A little chocolate & good hop profile & it does what it says & finishes dry 👍 Solid!
BEN –
ark brown with a big beige head. Aroma of roasted grains, piney hops and cocoa. Sweetish, bitter, roasted, piney, resinous, citric. Light-medium bodied, smooth, dry.

Like drinking velvet. Outstanding beer
Antony –
Very good
Glenn –
Great brewery, nice beer
Jared –
5*
James –
Very good
Anthony –
A sensible 4.4%, but full of all the deep roasted earthy flavours you want, with a velvet feel. Stout as straight and as well brewed as you like. I really appreciated the simplicity of it all, and all the complexity a good stout brings. I think that makes sense. A big thumbs up.
Danielle –
Nice break from the sweet stouts I’ve been having lately.

Andre –
Good but I’ve tried better.

Super. Really hits the back of the throat like a dry white wine, but it’s a stout. Explain that one…

Interesting. Light and easy drinking with roast and dark chocolate. Not getting much of the citrus and pine that you usually would with Simcoe though.

Dry, coffee, malty, medium bitter finish. Pretty decent beer but a little on the thin side due its low ABV.

Near jet black, tanned creamy head with superb retention and lacing. Inviting aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, all the classic notes but fresh on the nose. Its dry but smooth, roasty, coffee beans, chocolate with some creaminess. Moderate bitterness. Excellent.
Ross –
Excellent stout, their 1890 is better but not by much. a drink with your dinner on a weekday evening kind of beer.

Always at the top with Kernel, dry stout, as it is written, some bitterness, dry and coffee, roasted malts, all I love!
Ivan –
On a lighter side for stouts, but still quite nice.
Matthew –
Excellent flavour for such a low abv. Quite watery mouth feel but to be expected at sub 5%. Surprisingly good.
Edward –
An interesting take on a stout. Has a distinctive 'shiny' taste. Probably wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but I'm a big fan of it
