Richard (17/8/2020) is right; these Kernel bottles do need to be poured carefully. They seem to change the recipes; this bottle is marked 7.2% but they don’t list the hop varieties.
Not much of a nose at first, but it developed a lot as I drank the beer, and it shows a delicate brownish head. Smooth mouthfeel, and a very black colour; I can’t see light through it.
Quite a long bitter aftertaste, but it is the bit in between I really like:-
That taste starts slowly, with a hint of sweet caramel and burnt flavours. Also tiny suggestions of vinous/raisin flavour at the start. Then I am getting lots of “black” flavours from the dark malts and roasted barley (presumably). There is a hint of coffee and plain chocolate/bitter cocoa coming through and a tiny bit of liquorice. I really like this stuff. I think it would be spoilt if you put it in the fridge. Or to pour it straight down your neck without savouring it.
Only I have a problem; I also have a bottle of the 9.5% Imperial Brown Stout. Can I drink them both in the same evening?

Don’t see this style of stout very much , bitter chocolate with very little sweetness and a long aftertaste . I liked it , makes a change from the sweeter stouts I usually get . Does throw a heavy sediment so store upright and pour carefully if you don’t like sludge at the bottom of your glass !

This is the best straight up export stout I have tried, but then it is the Kernel so why wouldn’t it be. This beer is far from simple. There may be no coffee, vanilla or cherries, but there’s loads of malty character balanced by a wonderful alcohol hit.

Absolutely beautiful stout this one. Nothing extra, nothing fancy, just a well brewed example of what a stout should be. Cracking.

Didn’t like this one ,quite bitter for the strength, I prefer the sweeter, syrupy, thick tastes, so ok, not brilliant.

This stout is a perfect example of the original beer style, beautifully balanced, so very drinkable, a great achievement. All lovers of dark (and light) beer should try this. It deserves it’s place in the top 50 beers of all time..

Very nice traditional stout, good strong burnt malty tastes.

Matthew –
Great body with roasty malt, liquorice and coffee. Excellent.
BEN –
Pours inky black, medium silky head and light carbonation. Rich roasted malt aroma’s, molasses, anise, coffee and chocolate. Tastes velvety smooth with light bitterness and a big kick. A great stout.
James –
This is the best straight up export stout I have tried, but then it is the Kernel so why wouldn’t it be. This beer is far from simple. There may be no coffee, vanilla or cherries, but there’s loads of malty character balanced by a wonderful alcohol hit.
Stuart –
A cracking stout.
Matthew –
Absolute classic, straight up stout. Dark, decadent and roasty and no adjuncts
Alex –
Excellent beer. Amazing roasty bitterness

Strong, black, with a hint of hoppy bitterness. This is how a London stout should be. Gotta love Kernel!

Classic strong stout – no gimmicks and all the better for it!

Beautiful dry stout for a 7.2%.
Waldemar –
It could be simple stout, but don’t underestimate this bad boy. It’s a smashing, classic stout, full of malty and roasted notes with heart-warming booziness behind it. I love it.
James –
Proper stout
Andrew –
Solid heavier stout
Oliver –
Not bad but was expecting more
Paul B –
Jamie –
Very strong roast flavours which I love. Burnt malt as well which, when combined with the deep chocolate, coffee and nutty flavours make for an excellently crafted stout.
Matthew –
Stunning stout.
James –
Espresso aroma, pouring thick & sticky, it’s pure darkness. Espresso, liquorice, black treacle with a 7.4% kick. Amazing stuff.
