I would say the name isn’t quite right for this one. I unashamedly love a Black Forest gateau. Unsubtle, sweet chocolate cake with cherry and lots of cream, what’s not to like? This beer doesn’t deliver that experience. There’s no cream and it’s not sweet, it needs some lactose to sort that out. It’s not a bad beer, just the name had me thinking one thing and it delivered something else. It’s dark, pretty thick, there’s a cherry-like sourness and some other pleasant things … just not the classic 70s dessert flavours I wanted.
Think of the rich and decadent dessert your grandmother served in the 1970s – and stayed loyal to. Here’s the delicious bottled version, but you don’t need to take it out of the freezer to defrost. A dark December stout inspired by forest fruits, expect tastes of chocolate, coffee and cherry. This is a 6.5% beer from the Hackney brewers, Howling Hops.
