We’ve taken it upon ourselves to assemble a nine beer mixed case of incredible independent brews that are not only unmissable, but act as delicious hints of the flavours, styles and breweries that will likely dominate 2017. Cloudwater – DIPA v12 9% The latest incarnation of the Cloudwater’s celebrated series of Double IPAs, v12 is the first to find its way into 440ml cans. Cloudwater have once again set beer geeks’ pulses racing with aromas of tropical fruit, a silky mouthfeel and big juicy flavours. Mosaic hops take the lead in v12, backed up in Whirlpool by Nelson Sauvin. A double yeast pitch of 4th generation WLP095 was introduced to experiment with flavour changes, and a small addition of Caramalt for increased fruitiness. Cloudwater are RateBeer’s 5th best brewery in the world for several reasons, v12 is the latest and perhaps greatest yet.

Buxton & To Øl – Sky Mountain – Berliner Weisse 4.9% Buxton have already established themselves as one of the UK’s most exciting and quality driven breweries due to a diverse and flavourful output of both their own brews and collaborations. While previous brewing alliances with breweries such as Omnipollo have delved into the darker, imperial side of craft beer, this collaboration with Copenhagen’s To Øl transports you to the highest mountain in Denmark, Himmelbjerget (otherwise known as Sky Mountain) for a bright, refreshing and complex flavour experience. Dry hopped to high heaven and bursting with sherbet and ripe stone fruit flavours, this tart Berliner Weisse is a beer wonder you won’t want to miss.

Buxton & To Øl – Sky Mountain – Berliner Weisse 4.9% Buxton have already established themselves as one of the UK’s most exciting and quality driven breweries due to a diverse and flavourful output of both their own brews and collaborations. Built upon the rich heritage of its brew team and influenced by the “precision of German brewing and the idiosyncratic nature of Belgian beers”, the Bristol-based brewery offer a flavourful and classically driven departure from a beer landscape dominated by hoppy IPAs. Lagers will once again reign throughout 2017, so we decided to stick an especially good one in our FOMO case. Running With Sceptres will make anyone who drinks it feel like royalty thanks to Pilsner, Vienna and Caramalts and the addition of a huge whack of hops. This is a Special Lager Beer – a very special lager beer indeed.

The Kernel – Citra IPA 7.1% Tucked away inside the unassuming surroundings of a Bermondsey railway arch, The Kernel Brewery is widely perceived as one of the finest brewery’s not only in the UK, but the world. A clear and concise approach to brewing pales, IPAs, London porters and stouts could well be perceived as too simplistic today, yet ultimately it leaves zero margin for error and The Kernel rarely falter. Widely regarded as one of the best British IPAs to ever be brewed, this Citra IPA has repeatedly stood toe-to-toe with the best examples of the style thanks to its bold grapefruit, pineapple, citrus fruit and pine flavours. Sweet malt balances the bitterness, and a smooth mouthfeel completes the experience. Rarely found outside of London, make sure you don’t miss out.

Fierce Beer – Cranachan Killer – Pale Ale 5.5% How could we not represent Scotland within this selection of essential drinking. While Brewdog may well have opened the door for many craft beer lovers to embark upon their first craft beer adventure, there’s far more to Scottish brewing to discover. Fierce Beer started life as a home-brew hobby in March 2013 on Great Western Road, Aberdeen. After local acclaim, in early 2016 they moved to their new microbrewery in Dyce, and today they’re are responsible for dynamic takes on classic styles. Cranachan Killer is a an oatmeal pale ale with enough local berries and honey to feed a clan of Highlanders – just make sure you’re enjoying the beer and not them!

Boundary Brewing – Export Stout – Stout 7% Hailing from Belfast, Boundary is a brewing cooperative brewery owned by its members. Head brewer Matthew Dick is leading the charge when it comes to dynamic Irish brews that draw from the country’s landscape and history. This decadent stout is to be savoured and enjoyed. Chocolate, caramel, coffee and dried fruit combine with the roasted biscuity malt bill to give a complex and smooth Export Stout. The combination of painterly labelling and complex beer that becomes more rewarding with every sip made Boundary Brewing an essential addition to the FOMO case.

Brew By Numbers – 05|20 IPA 6.5% Brew By Numbers have quickly established themselves as one of London’s most exciting breweries. Focusing on forward-thinking beers that emphasise quality and drinkability the Bermondsey brewery have built an impressive back-catalogue of brews. This latest IPA is hazy delight overflowing with juicy flavours of citrus and tropical fruits. Effortlessly drinkable and most definitely unmissable, BBNo have once again exhibited that the UK is indeed capable of serving up seriously good juicy bangers.

Brew By Numbers – 05|20 IPA 6.5% Brew By Numbers have quickly established themselves as one of London’s most exciting breweries. Focusing on forward-thinking beers that emphasise quality and drinkability the Bermondsey brewery have built an impressive back-catalogue of brews. This latest IPA is hazy delight overflowing with juicy flavours of citrus and tropical fruits.
