Having spent years searching for a viable US alternative to Sierra Nevada’s classic IPA, I was delighted when I came across Liberty Ale. If you’ve had the classic Anchor Steam then you’ll recognise (unsurprising) echoes of its notes in this fruity APA. A hefty ABV gives a nice kick of heat in the aftertaste! This became a firm favourite of mine immediately.

A fruity alchohol aroma. Pours a lovely clear light brown in the glass. Starts with a sweetness of plums and stewed fruit that runs through the beer till the end and gives you Christmas cake notes. There’s lots of toasted, sweet malts in the taste too and on the finish there’s also a mild bitterness of grapefruit rind.

Clear golden/light amber pour, small white head but excellent retention. Aroma is like nothing I have experienced before, very hoppy, malt, flora, candy, stone fruits is the best I can describe but doesn’t really touch it. Intriguing. Taste is sweet malts, again very hoppy, with the stone fruits, a bit yeasty and flavoursome. Moderate body and a lovely soft carbonation. Excellent.
