After a rather successful, hectic and voice-losing few days at Craft Beer Rising we are mega excited to be listing a range of cracking brews from the New Zealand Craft Beer Collective – made up of Yeastie Boys, Renaissance Brewing, Tuatara, 8 Wired and Three Boys Brewing.
Being mostly Kiwis (with one rogue Aussie) here in the HonestBrew team, we’ve been keen to get our hands on some tasty brews from Aotearoa (the land of the long white cloud) for some time. It was upon hearing familiar ‘fush and chups’ accents making their way across the Craft Beer Rising hall, we knew this was our chance.
Not only does Kiwi-land boast some of the best hops in the world but it has some damn good brewers who are doing great things with said hops. The New Zealand Craft Beer Collective is made up of Wellington breweries Yeastie Boys and Tuatara Breweries, Renaissance Brewing from Blenheim, 8 Wired Brewing Co from Warkworth and Three Boys Brewery from Christchurch. In true Kiwi style the breweries have teamed up to bring some of their best brews to UK shores.
So who are these guys?
The Yeastie boys, dynamic duo of Stu McKinlay and Sam Possenniskie, burst into the beer landscape 6 years ago and have been winning awards ever since. Their flagship Pot Kettle Black is our pick to try – fresh and hoppy yet (as the name would suggest) black as the night and malty rich.
Award-winning New Zealand craft beer producer Renaissance Brewing is located in the rather grape-heavy region of Marlborough. Keen to rival their grape-based cousins (or cuzzy bros), Renaissance set out to create quality ales that enlighten the palate and thrill the senses – and they succeeded. Plus their brewery used to be an ice cream factory which is a pretty cool fact to know. Their award winning Stonecutter Scotch Ale is the big, hearty, ‘red wine’ of their range and shouldn’t be missed.
Tuatara (named after New Zealand’s reptilian native) focus on keeping their brewing true to style. Tuatara go direct to the source and use the ingredients that have made a style possible. Give their Bohemian Pilsner a try and you’ll soon discover it’s not so named because it reads poetry and sips absinthe, rather it’s thanks to the pilsner yeast direct from the Czech Republic.
8 Wired Brewing pays tribute to the legendary Kiwi can-do mentality. ‘Number 8 Wire’ is a type of wire originally used for electric fencing. Kiwis have since used it to fix just about anything and it has become a symbol of their ingenuity. With a legendary name, it’s only right 8 Wired have legendary brews. Their Tall Poppy Red IPA is our pick – an ale not afraid of standing tall among other great beers. It is big, yet refreshing, bold but balanced and definitely one not to miss.
Three Boys Brewing
At Three Boys Brewery the team personally tend each small-scale brew from start to finish, selecting only the finest malt and hops available. Their beers are unfiltered and unpasteurised and their aim is simple: to produce the finest quality beer with the finest quality taste. Their Oyster Stout is one to try. Brewed by oysters (nah, just kidding), this silky smooth stout is rich and complex. It contains Bluff oysters (the best kind of oysters) and has a light smoky flavour.
